Our Logo

Aquilegia desertorum is one of many Columbine flowers to develop a red and yellow coloration providing nectar for hummingbirds present in the Southwest. Arizona Columbine is a favorite with its profusion of small bright flowers. Even the hot, dry summers do not shorten the three-month blooming season. Arizona Columbine grows from the mountains into the middle desert elevations of Maricopa County in North Central Arizona and is more amenable to non-mountain climates. Shade is a must in hot desert climates. The Arizona Columbine is resistant to rabbits and deer. These perennials dislike clay and grow best in a compost enriched garden loam.

Brief History

In 1946, Mrs. Ned (Carmela) Creighton, a member of The Arizona Federation of Garden Clubs, an umbrella organization in Phoenix that governed the garden clubs throughout the Valley, thought the increasing population in Phoenix could benefit from another garden club. Carmela gathered together  ten ladies from North Central and Northeast Phoenix who wanted to “learn how to beautify their homes with flowers.” It was this group of women who founded Columbine Garden Club.
